Two Fishermen
Two Fishermen There are two men, which have the great difference. Michael, a town repeater who is tall and eager. The other is Smith, a very small fellow who has a appalling occupation called hangman. In the story Ãâà ¡Ãâà °two fishermenÃâà ¡ by Morley Callaghan, the author sets these two people on one boat at the beginning; I think his intent is to make a opportunity to let these two strangers having a conversation in order to give us a initial impression about the main characters.Smith, in many ways attracts our attention. Although he is a mild, harmless looking little guy, he performs a very difficult job (hanging) without shame. Ãâà ¡Ãâà °SomebodyÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s got to do my job. ThereÃâà ¡Ãâà ®s got to be a hangmanÃâà ¡ Ãâà ¡Ãâà ° the job hasnÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯t been so disagreeableÃâà ¡. From the quotation we see that Smith loves his job no matter how other people say about it. Michael, however, he doesnÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯t appreciate his own jo b very much even itÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s a nice one.Ethel Smith (left) and Fanny Rosenfeld (second fro...Ãâà ¡Ãâà °But itÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s nothing like a first-class city paper and I donÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯t expect to be working on it long. I want to get a reporterÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s job on a city paper.Ãâà ¡ Michael, on the other hand is kind of discrimination against SmithÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s job. Ãâà ¡Ãâà °If you took another job, you and your wife could probably go fishing together.Ãâà ¡ Ãâà ¡Ãâà °I just meant that if it was such disagreeable work, Smitty.Ãâà ¡ As we see here, MichaelÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s attitude toward to SmittyÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯s job could relate to our real life. In our society, there are many difficult jobs. People donÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯t like them because they are dirty or dangerous, but if we donÃâà ¡Ãâà ¯t go to do, then who will do them for us? As a victim, Smith in the end is almost killed by the angry crowd. Ãâ à ¡Ãâà °One small stone hit him on the head.
